I've always seen the representation of the aftermath being that the two halves diverge so that they miss the target.

It makes a certain amount of sense though: A blade works by pushing aside the two halves of the thing it's cutting, so if it's the object that's moving and not the blade, the object ought to deviate as it passes the blade.
