Are we supposed to translate ~ppoi in regards to Yuudachi, or no? Because I see more and more people translating it lately.

    Well, I do. Others disagree.
(also, as an aside - the puchi's don't say words they only say their respective lines - like pokemon. Yasen there only says 'Yasen', Nakasan says 'Kan'. They're not translated)

With the anime probably bringing new fans to the series. Most fansubbing groups I see all leave it as "Poi" and there's the fact that you "Hear" her say Poi. It's different in written form.

Kinda like hearing "Desu" from Suiseiseki in Rozenm Maiden. In manga form, someone reading translations might not realize that Suiseiseki is exaggerating her desus(which is a normal sentance ending in japanese) but in the anime, you definitely hear her exaggerate the Desu even for sentances that normally wouldn't have it.

Poi is not normal, so the speech tick is more pronounced when you hear it.

Ah, I talked about this is post #1766859; for a quick TL;DR, -poi is a verbal tic that is capable of being somewhat translated, unlike nanodesu (discussed in post #1740825), it has a bit of (separate) meaning aattached to it.

But eh. We still have the problem with Kongou's speech, which is much harder to do translation-wise - we often hve to resort to typography instead.

Just FYI, Paracite, I'm using Firefox, and I'm not seeing any black outlines on the text for which you've used webkit strokes. Unfortunately, from my admittedly brief research, it seems Firefox doesn't support this text effect function. It does support text shadow, but I've seen that used, and it seems rather cumbersome.

As for me, I like to leave -poi but there's time it feels awkward or it doesn't work very much with the rest of the text so I translate it just like Paracite.
If I have to say, it depens if you feel like translating it or not.

As for Inazuma's nanodesu and Kongou's desu, well, I saw that they like to add them before I started translating things so I just follow how the other do.

That was Caucasus' doing. Guess I didn't notice because I use chrome.

I tend to translate -ppoi if I can fit in within the sentence, and to me, the valley-girl image it invokes is entirely appropriate. The constant -ppoi's gives me the impression that she's less in touch with reality, sort of like an air-head. It's as though she places more importance on the characteristics, or qualities of objects or ideas, as opposed to the actual objects or ideas themselves. (or rather, to use a philosophy analogy, she's someone who's stuck in Plato's cave all the time and focuses on the Shadows instead of the actual Forms.)

Yeah, some might find it annoying to read, but really, I get the same impression when I'm listening to Yuudachi. Doesn't make her less endearing though, it's part of the charm.

Pois in isolation gets transliterated, since there's nothing to translate.

I transcribe Inazuma'a nanodesu (or -nodesu, if it follows a 'verb') sometimes, especially if the use of punctuated emphasis is appropriate. Otherwise I tend to reduce the number of -nanodesu (as is my practice with most verbal tics) if I can, since they seem to break the flow of speech in English when used excessively (which is usually not an issue in the original Japanese).

I'm reluctant to transcribe Kongou's DEESU/DESS since well, it's odd in translated form for the English returnee to use more Japanese words than her other more 'native', more 'Japanese' counterparts.デース/デス is often used to indicate unusual inflection at the end of sentences, which fits with Kongou's background as someone born in England quite well. If you listen to the rest of her sentences (in-game or anime), you'll notice that she stresses other words quite oddly as well. Basically she talks with a stereotypical 'gaijin' accent.

I try to approximate this accent by making her sound like a Brit, along with use of naturalized French words when àpropos (see what I just did there?). I admit it can be somewhat hard though, as I'm, well, not British. Paracite is, I think, and some of the translations he comes up with are simply brilliant. See post #1922630

    Wotcher... The remodel is complete...

In my personal headcanon, when I'm reading Kongou's lines in English, she has a posh 'fake-sounding' RP accent, which degenerates into a genuine Cumbrian "Oop North" accent when she's flustered, as befits her place of birth.

Yeah, since -poi can be a modifier, rather than a free form, it can be translated in some (most) cases.

I'm not British - the opposite side of the world, really. Well, that'd be if we were talking about Spain, but close enough. But, I don't think people would really want translations done in a New Zealand accent - 'Churr bro, I'm real stoked that you think my translations are sweet. Choice.'. And suchlike. But I grew up with UK, US and NZ television, so I've got all the accent bases covered. And then I did (Japanese) linguistics - so I can analyse the shit out of accents.

With Kongou, I like to think of her a Cumbrian lass who got sent to a fancy boarding school (Japan), but still is Oop North in her heart. Though going full Barrovian would be a trifle... strange - 'Y'orite, Admiral? Where y'off for uh'day's lunch? Doin' awt? I'm goin' t' Mamiyas! Ge' thou's clobber on an' 'ave a bevvie wit' us!'.

So when she's all casual, I tend to restrict it to more... general Northern slang. Or Southern slang. Or whatever people may have seen on the Beeb.

I've changed it to text shadow and the results seem more than satisfactory. I've tried viewing it in both Chrome and Firefox (well, actually Iceweasel) and it displays perfectly. I also think it looks quite better this way.

Definitely visible now, and it does look nice, but good heavens, what relatively bulky code for the effect to work.

It's has to have the webkit and Firefox scripts (and ie?) in it, so it's really the same thing repeated a few times.

Oh, I'm aware, and I know it's not especially complex, just repetitive so it'll work on all browsers. I still maintain my opinion until such time (if ever) that I get accustomed to using it.
