I haven't even watched the thing, but it sounds like this anime was a disaster.

It's turned out pretty generic. I was hoping for more seriousness after the ep 4 reference to how the real Kisaragi got sunk off Wake Island, especially given how Ep 11-12 were apparently the Battle of Midway and how Akagi did everything the IJN did.

Instead of a mix between serious action and comedy, it went all comedy and safe choices (except that Fubuki dream of the Admiral's).

I wouldn't call that its failing points, like nothing wrong with it being silly at times and not serious. The real problem besides the show not knowing what to do, is that noone was a character besides Fubuki, it wasn't kancolle, it was Fubuki the show. Besides Kisaragi's death was pointless, serious or not, they just killed her cuz we needed a death...for some reason (and she wasn't even a character).
