And to be fair, there was a few exceptions: Shoukaku's damage control crew saved her twice (Coral Sea and Santa Cruz) and if the USS Cavalla hadn't attacked when she was refuelling and recovering planes, Shoukaku could have survived the Battle of Phillipine Sea.
