The text does use δΎ΅ι£ instead of εε, and while δΎ΅ι£ literally means "eating into" and is usually translated as erosion/corrosion/encroachment depending on context, it is also used in fiction where something evil or some weird parasite/virus is eating into the body of a character, for which I think most English speakers would use the world "assimilation".
I've also seen Japanese gamers use δΎ΅ι£ when talking about things getting merged into or assimilated in games, like in Prototype or Dead Space.
