@Paracite: Mind if I replace "corrosion" with "assimilation"? The text does use 侵食 instead of 同化, and while 侵食 literally means "eating into" and is usually translated as erosion/corrosion/encroachment depending on context, it is also used in fiction where something evil or some weird parasite/virus is eating into the body of a character, for which I think most English speakers would use the world "assimilation".

I've also seen Japanese gamers use 侵食 when talking about things getting merged into or assimilated in games, like in Prototype or Dead Space.
