According to conjecture about how, after whatever the Admiral did, the Abyssal girls started regaining their consciousness and the riggings going berserk, I'd say a little bit of both but leaning towards abyssal creatures parasitising shipgirls.

It might have been too responsive and acting to protect her out of instinct. To disastrous results
