Kamo can also mean sucker. The ladettes became terrified at the idea of inviting Akitsushima for a mahjong game because she calls all the lucky ships "kamo".

Can't figure out how to translate the pun.

I'm debating whether to put the implied_rape tag on it, because it does seem like Big Boat-chan is being molested here.

It's even a deeper pun, as 'kamo' is also duck - and Zuikaku's the turkey.

Unfortunately, there's only two slang words for sucker that I know of that uses birds names, and that's pigeon... and turkey.

We could use 'duck/duckie' as a diminutive, as in the cockney usage, implying that Akitsushima looks down on them. Or, in the same vein, 'bird' meaning female.

I can't think of anything good either...

Duckie works very good. I'm worried that people unfamiliar with Cockney might not get it, but eh, most people should understand that the diminutive can be seen as a put-down insult, so go ahead.

Granted, it doesn't have the gambling connotations of sucker, but well, can't think of anything better here.

If they didn't have the 'turkey' quip there, we could have used something else... ah well. We can only do what we can.

Aww crap, I forgot that 'lucky duck' is a term...

Yep, a three-way pun really limits the word choice. I was trying to get two-faced/seven-faced to jive, but... can't get it to work. Oh well.

Also, simultaneous collaborative translation work with zero redundant notes! Guess hitting F5 often is important.

(Note history ended up as a bit of a mess though.)

    *tag-team, go!*

Lucky duck seems to work well! Excellent. We can just pretend that the ladettes don't know what lucky duck means...

It also carries the connotation that all they have is dumb luck, and crucially not skill!

Actually heard duck more often in Kurosagi rather than in gambling context.
And there's also another bird for sucker

What would happen if they invite Fukou Fusou to be their 4th player? Or heaven forbid, the other birdie.

    Mahjong tournament:

East: Fusou, South: Yamashiro, West: Taihou, North: Mutsu

    Referee: Kamijou Touma

    MC: Shoukaku

I dunno, I've renchan'd plenty of times. Pisses the hell out of the other players, but it's doable. Never going negative is possible in a 4-player game if you can bait the others into going risky.

Used to play faaaaar to much mahjong at university.

Is it possible in mahjong for everyone to keep sinking into negative point without anyone gaining any ?

    Wait, wait, I get it:

    EVERYONE NEGATIVE POINTS

(to the point where scientific notation is required.)

Misfortune breaks the laws of mathematics.

Then explosion ending. A true Kancolle comic!

    Edit:

    Seika said:

Generally impossible, as nearly all variants of mahjong (or all of them) are zero-sum games (ignoring rounding errors, which are negligible). Even penalties are paid to other players.

I would be like if all players lose money at poker.

Of course, the sheer amount of misfortune concentrated there may warp reality anyway...

Mahjong is out!! Let's play house, yeah!!
Don't tell me... even the Unsinkable Yukikaze got duckie'd...? The kana for "Never-go-bust" (negative points) is given the alternative reading "Unsinkable".
How's 'bout that new arrival, Akitsushima? She looked like she was free before, what about having her join?
Just before, she called Zuikaku-san 'Lucky duck Zuikaku-san!!' She called her a duck...!! Akitsushima's verbal tic, "Kamo" (maybe), can also mean duck (and sucker).
    Sounds good!!
What's all that all of a sudden, Tenryuu...?
    No, hold up!!
    She's... Akitsushima's dangerous...!!
The out-ranging dora bomber - that Zuikaku-san!? The kanji for "Calling-Discard Mahjong" (A playing tactic where one continuously calls for discarded tiles) is given the alternative reading "Out-ranging".
And that's not all... Shigure-san and Yukikaze also...
Oh! You guys!! Let's play mahjong!!
    Arrwwight!!
    Even though she's a turkey!?
The ever-pouring renchan Shigure-san too!? Renchan - where a player continues to be the dealer Here, Renchan has the alternate reading of Unending Rain.
We don't have enough players though. What should we do?
    Sounds good!!
    Sounds good!!
