I've heard that there is a way to choose the color of your team somehow, of course it also sets the opposing teams color to be the opposite of yours. Don't ask me how it's done, I don't know.
But I don't see a way that Nintendo could implement customizeable hair color without players eventually wanting to have the option to customize their outfits color too. And then they will have to revamp how to identify teams so that there's no confusion.

That's the lock colour option or colourblind mode, it sets you to blue and orange since colourblind people can easilly tell those two apart.
