It's more complicated than that. Basically, in the anime Kumiko and Reina have really huge subtext together but Reina has a crush on the music teacher Taki-sensei.

The Love Triangles emerge. I suppose nothing can end without someone getting hurt. The baby would have a weird upbringing with three parents, if it were to proceed via the status quo.
