The power to know the name and purpose of an item can be handy.

...Provided you can interpret the information you get from it.

Hey, I was checking around for stuff like this yesterday, and it wasn't showing up in my artist subscriptions or the related pools. No idea how it or yesterday's Tani Takeshi strip didn't appear for me when I looked.

Edit: There's part of the problem; the post was never added to the "4-Panel Strips I Posted on Twitter" pool, until I did it just now. Of course, I also just searched for new stuff from my subbed artists, and it still didn't show up yesterday, so that's not the whole issue.

Well, in that case, sorry for stealing from your pool five minutes before you showed up, senpai. :3

    On a completely different note, don't we have a "no translation > partial translation" policy around here? Cleaning it up's more trouble than doing it from scratch. <<;;

    ???

How would Rinnosuke know if something is made from re-purposed materials just by knowing the name and purpose of something? Knowing whether a cape is made from cotton, fox pelts or used tablecloths would have no bearing on its name or purpose.

Eh, as I read it, it's an amateur craft job, so he still sees its name and purpose as the original. Could be mistaken, iunno.

I know you're being tongue-in-cheek, but yeah, I'm hardly going to blame you for server weirdness at my end of things.

Not quite sure what you're trying to say. Do you mean people should leave stuff untranslated if they can't translate it fully?

That's about what I got from it too.

Probably referring to this part of howto:translate.

    Show
    • Make sure you understand the original completely.
      • Don't translate just the parts in katakana, or two random bubbles you happened to understand out of twenty. That's not helpful. Moreover, because Japanese relies almost completely on context, your translation will be wrong if you do that.
      • Don't translate things if you can't quite grasp the last panel and/or the punchline. If you can't, it's a good indication you probably didn't grasp the earlier parts either. Again, context is the king.

Ah, that. I'm fairly sure it only applies to minimal added translations, per the description, as opposed to (for instance) demonstrably competent translation of the majority of the post, with just one or two items left aside because they're too unclear, even for a guess.

Agh, so many edits! *makes notes* Thought I was doing better after last time, but that was admittedly a much simpler comic.

That was more or less the thought, yes, unless perhaps it's just a couple tiny things. Or rather, I thought that's what the official policy said (insofar as anything is actually 'official' around here). Mostly since for one, missing context means what does get translated could easily be wrong, and in addition, whoever finishes up often ends up redoing existing notes for flow and consistency anyway. It's not *that* important, of course.

Don't sweat it too much; a good number of them were purely formatting/punctuation tweaks.

Ah, that's my fault. I sometimes forgot to add it into the pool after I posted them.

My apologies. I promise it won't happen again.

It's definitely an important skill on many roguelikes and dungeon crawlers, that's for sure.

You could just carry potions of Lore but that's a pain in the ass.

Blessed scrolls of identify are much better. Easy to make, light, and identifies every item in the inventory.
