Who needs a husband when you can have a wife, right junko? Also poor little Clownpiece she has no pairing thus has no one to get love from.

Why do people ship these two? Especially when Junko was and likely still is married.

Moreover, to me, why do people keeping associating her with needing a husband when, iirc, it's her son that she lost? I don't recall any issues concerning a husband.

Well besides the fact that shipping rarely takes into account any sort of fact or reality concerning its characters, Junko's husband is kind of a non-character.

Sorta like the Watatsuki's husbands, sure they exist, but we don't know what they look like and their entire relevance to the setting is that they're married to other characters.

It's weird since her story mentions no husband http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Junko. Western fans got the husband part mixed up so as far as junko is concerned she's single

If she doesn't have a husband how did she have a kid. Old tales like that would vilify people who had children out of wedlock.

    P.S. from the link you gave. {Chún Hú, also known as "Xuán Qī" (玄妻, lit. "dark lady"), was the wife of Xia Dynasty ruler Hòu Yì (后羿)}

    Pick one
    Husband died
    Out of wedlock
    Husband left
    She left
    Son is a virgin birth

In any case her official profile doesn't list a husband so you can infer that she has no husband. Chang'e is listed as married and junko is not, like I said before the western fandom had it a bit twisted

Thing is if we were to follow the original Chinese mythology and the ending, Junko killed her husband off for killing their kid.. So I don't think she still holds him in any high regard.

The answers are in Reisen's ending. She had a husband, but it's more confusing than that. See the relationship chart from Reisen's ending.

In Touhou, Houyi was Chang'e's husband as well as Junko's husband. Along the way he killed Junko's child, and Junko killed him. So Houyi is dead because he was murdered by Junko. Junko's rage was so great that she forgot the reasons for her grudge, so now she lashes out at Chang'e.

It's mostly there besides the order of who married who first, but theories are that Houyi left Junko for Chang'e and killed the son on the way out. Or Houyi was married to Chang'e first and as in some versions of the myth, after Chang'e took the immortality medicine and drifted away, he went mad. Then, as in the Chun Hu myth, he goes on to marry Junko and kills her/their son (aka Bo Feng).

Also how did Junko even have a kid in the first place if she's a "divine spirit"? What "species" was she before she expunged everything except the grudge from herself?

Likely human? Both divine and vengeful spirits are said to be formerly human (well, "alive"). In the case of divine spirits, they merely came to be worshipped during life or after death, and so ascended. The most notable example before Junko was Kanako and possibly Miko. Kanako is explicitly said to be a former human or group of humans who became a divine spirit and kami. Miko also has similarities.

Wow, all that stuff about Junko and Chang'e's backstories really is fascinating. I hope doujin artists address this in more detail.

    Yes. See Kanako's SoPm entry.

"She corresponds with the class of divine spirits. Because of this, it is believed she used to be some form of human long ago, but their identity, or even whether they were an individual or a group, is no longer determinable."

I think there's some fanart of her and Cirno together, so it's just a matter of time.

Well, that's not explicitly stating that she was human so much as speculating on in being likely. Akyuu relies on second-hand sources often, so it's really left up to the reader how much faith s/he places in her.

So yeah, it's a possibility. I like it, but it's not canon the same way that she fought Suwako in the past is canon.

This makes me think of a good point to bring up. A lot of people are forgeting that japanese dieties don't need a normal pairing for kids. After all, that main shinto trio were birthed from their father just washing his face. A woman and not even sex was involved. Shinto dieties are wacky like that, man.

For all we know her kid could've been born from her hacking up a loogey.

But Junko isn't one of those shinto deities.
One of the theories is that Junko was Houyi's previous wife and had a kid with him, then he left her, killed the kid, and went with Chang'e. Then Junko killed him and went mad at Chang'e since it's her fault.
Looking at the relations scheme in Reisen's ending (spoiler), this is probably the most likely explanation.

It was mentioned in CiLR, from Eirin's perspective.

The two princesses (the Watatsuki) were my distant relatives. To put it in human terms, one was the wife of a grandnephew of mine, while the other was the wife of their son.

Now that I recall it, I remember seeing once a really big chart that included the lunar dynasty, many gods and ubran legends and how they all connect (With the Touhou chars, of course) and it showed how the watatsuki princesses were married
But I can't for the life of me find it again
