To be fair, these aren't their real/practical masses. Once they've taken on fuel, (or in KanColle terms, eaten,) or had their refits, most of these ships are much heavier.

The Kagerou class, for example, goes from 2000 tons to 2500 tons in battle condition, which which is what they were always in for any practical measurement. (Imagine eating a quarter your weight in food every sitting... Assuming a relatively light 45 kg, that's about 12 kg/26 lbs of food per meal.) The Kagerou, in particular, were so (relatively) massive specifically because the lighter preceeding classes (like Shiratsuyu) had poor seaworthiness stemming from putting heavy guns on top of a lighter destroyer platform.

The notion that Yuubari was 3,000 tons is likewise a lie, as Tk3997 covered during the Yuubari post. She's actually 4,200 tons when you actually get past all her design hurdles and load her with fuel, which is basically 40% overweight by the time all is said and done.

(Plus, if we're talking about Nagato as heavyweight, keep in mind Yamato nearly DOUBLED her mass while only being about 40 meters longer.)

Which is kind of why Katori is "fat": She was built with a wider beam than is usual for her destroyer-like length, because this would help stabilize her on the seas for trainee sailors still growing their "sea legs". She also had both diesel and steam turbines, meaning she had the capacity to train crews on how to operate both at the same time, while at the same time cutting her speed down significantly because she was built for instructional value rather than speed, which is why she's woefully behind on that front.

Heh, I guess it would be more accurate to say she's a dwarf? She's as short as a child, but broad as an adult.
