In (Touhou canon) reality, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin knew exactly why they were on the moon, and the Apollo 11 mission was analogous to Gaius Julius Caesar having a Century build a bridge across the Rhein, going across the bridge to hold a formation, then having them dismantle the bridge and return -- Armstrong and Aldrin were the Centurions and the part of Caesar was played by Nixon and/or Khrushchev, who were working together in humanity's war against the Lunarians. The War part is as vague as possible, the rest of how it was developed is pure fandom speculation. One of the Touhou books does mention the lunar rabbits moving the mirror NASA put on the moon to measure the distance between Earth and the Moon with a laser.
But nothing about open warfare between NASA and the Lunarians, but then Touhou's war definition is a bit different from ours, after all the Remilia's rocket in Silent Sinner in Blue was considered a war of sorts.
