Certain ranks of rabbit soldier get ear decs at some point, I think; note that in official works the pins are only on the ears and not through them. Most of the other moon rabbits shown in SSiB have helmets instead of ear decs, while Udonge's never shown with a helmet (the "new" Reisen doesn't have either now since her role was changed from soldier to pet). The helmet-equipped rabbits also all look and act like rookies and have little to no combat experience or even any confidence that they can really fight. Also note, everything aside, that their ears are purely for their telepathic powers, they can definitely go without if need be.

Actually, considering the third panel post #2249731, it's not that much of a stretch to assume that's what happened to this Reisen. Just look at the positions of those blood splatters on her head.

That's why it is important to fight for something worth fighting for. There are those who have seen the grim side of reality and have been permanently scarred as a result but actually still enjoy what they do. All about mindset I guess, and doesn't just apply to military or police.
Considering that Reisen defected, this wasn't the war for her. Also, I didn't know we had "Reisen the war vet" pool. Best pool.

I was already aware of that while making my comment. I'm just saying that there is canon evidence about what Reisen's earrings are for and that many doujin artists fully admit to not only never playing the Touhou games, but also never even reading any of the Manga material either written by ZUN, thus perpetuating the state of affairs of people making Doujins based off other Doujins and making it more confusing for newcomers to get what the character's really about.
My personal gripe about this particular joke/meme is that it's explicity stated what Reisens earrings are while other joke/memes at least have some sort of leeway around them. Cirno being dumb joke? She's about as smart as any other child while the Fandom just exaggerates it a bit. Sakuya wearing pads? While dumb and ZUN will probably never say it outloud, that's kinda a "Don't ask don't tell kinda thing" since it's not like canon doesn't say that Sakuya "doesn't wear pads".
Some random fan back in the day made a joke about reisen's ears looking like cheap buttons and somehow that particular joke stuck around and I just don't get why compared to all the other Touhou Jokes.

Not even close. Tomoko only has hair and eyes like that because she's too much of an otaku (and probably also fujoshi) to care enough about making herself pretty, and she smiles because she has hope for the future. Basically, Tomoko is a deconstruction of Konata.
Reisen (in nicetack's images) looks like this because she's been to war, and not all of her made it back. Let's just say she lost more than her breasts, and leave it at that.
