Iowa and New Jersey shot at her a LOT during Operation Hailstone using Radar-assisted aiming while she's running away. One of her damaged line even reference that.
Iowa and her sister New Jersey were the flag ships of the USN taskforce that attacked the IJN base on Truk. Nowaki was part of a convoy that was trying to leave Truk at this time, but got ambushed by Iowa, New Jersey, and a few cruisers before they can escape to safety. To cut the story short, Nowaki was the only survivor.
February 1944, Operation Hailstone (at Truk Island), Nowaki escaped the anchorage, with BBs Iowa and New Jersey at dead pursuit. Classic stern chase, with both BBs shelling her from >30 km away. Iowa fired over 40 shots, and New Jersey fired, IIRC, 18 or so. First salvo from both ships straddled Nowaki (that is, the shells hit in front, behind and under her), so they got the range correct on the first go. Nowaki's skipper, however, was pretty smart and snaked around to-and-fro to avoid further salvos. He also directed the ship to flee into the sun, forcing Iowa and New Jersey to rely completely on radar soon after.
Nowaki ran away without suffering a single direct hit. She did suffer signficant splinter damage from the HE shells though.
