More accurately, having to deal with bones. I can hardly imagine a group that could compare to the Japanese in terms of fish expertise besides the Mediterranean nations.
It might also be the problem most "vegetarians" had- you can eat the sliced, pre-packaged filet, but if you see the animal it used to belong to, you can´t stomatch it.
I'm reminded in a certain chapter of Yakitate, that apparently some kids were thinking that fishes were swimming around in a pre-sliced form.. I guess that's just a joke by the author, but what the hey..

Even more accurately, dealing with bones using chopsticks, when, as an American, she's used to using fork and knife. The look on her face seems to say 'how am I supposed to use these on this?'
Any WW2 US Marine/navy might got sick of seafood I guess.
SPAM was all over the place for the U.S. during the war. Cheap, easy to make, doesn't require the choicest meats and cuts, and more importantly, doesn't really care with how it's stored. Big deal for the U.S. since it had to produce so much and ship the stuff to very far flung locations with mixed, extreme climates that may not have the fanciest of storage facilities.
Iowa should have been shown chowing down on Spam :D

I can see it now...
This might fit for a 12 noon hourly announcement for Iowa.

no pepsi or 7up...boooo -_-...and diet coke?...really?...you might as well have semi-skimmed milk instead, that's way better...but in all honesty there should be an option for wine...you can't have italien without at least a proper beveridge.
and indian cooking as well by the looks of it (even though marsala was a dish created within an indian restaurant in scotland XD)..also no pepsi or 7up...boooo -_-...and diet coke?...really?...you might as well have semi-skimmed milk instead, that's way better...but in all honesty there should be an option for wine...you can't have italien without at least a proper beveridge.
Marsala (wine from the Italian city of the same name) ≠ masala ('Indian' [Hindi] word for spice).
I just realized the apple of discord at the same time as NNescio. Marsala vs. Masala. I had some tikka masala this afternoon, actually; one of my favorite dishes! So is chicken marsala.

You do realize Japan and Europe are not the only places that use fish extensively, right?
