I'll say, it's suitable. Another part of "feeding the ducks" pool is that their state of poverty is the main topic.
Also, no, Hatsuzuki, do not eat those meat. I've tasted some of the most rank dishes that are way past their passable period of consumption. I felt as if I have turned undead.
Expired meats (and other protein rich foods) are just about the only canned food I'd say is bad once the best before date has passed by a month.
Note that best before and expiry are rather different concepts. Asian expiry dates should be heeded, Western Best Before dates are pretty soft. So Admiral's doing things right in this image.
For stuff like mosquito bite ointment however... well the Chiggerex Plus I've used this year has been over its date by a year and is 4 years old. Other than some sedimentation it still works just fine.

For stuff like medicine whether in pill or syrup form though it would be best not to consume it after the expiry date.

You speak truth.
Lotions on the other hand, especially ones that smell exactly like the (admittledly much more solid balm-like) stuff you've been using on mosquito bites since childhood? Usually fairly safe if they're not for anything serious.
Which reminds me, I just finished a bag of fish balls I found in the fridge last month.
It was 4 years past its expiration date.
Tastes like pickled fish balls, otherwise not that bad. Then again, it was tucked way back inside the freezer when I finally found it. Spent about 2 months finishing off the entire bag.
Can't say the same for the pork I found in the freezer, though. It had the consistency of mashed potatoes when I finally defrosted it...
