well It's reasonable to assume she assimilated Japanese values and studied proper etiquette beforehand
Indeed, for a teacher, they influence the students they teach, so they can't have someone who's haphazardly teaching english whilst only barely understanding the customs of the country she works in.

Really? Considering the most official reason for learning English anywhere in the world outside of the native English speaking countries is to be able to deal with foreigners or foreign media, you'd think it would be beneficial if an American English teacher also demonstrates how an average American (or a Western person in general) acts. The Japanese students hardly need a foreigner to teach them Japanese manners. It's not like Western cultures didn't contain proper manners, nor are those manners any worse than Japanese ones, if followed.

That isn't a bad point, but she's not some private teacher in a tutoring school, she's a school teacher along with that, take into account that these are students who will most likely stay in their country, so having a teacher ingrained with the customs they will have to keep most of the time, is the best approach.
Ellen is an ideal. Actual ALTs (how she's introduced in her bio) aren't hired for their teaching ability or their command of Japanese culture. They're simply foreign faces as prescribed by the current educational policy. People I know who worked that field have said that their role tends to amount to a glorified tape recorder anyway.
These were people who couldn't make it into JET and had to go the contracting route, though, so experiences may differ.
...now I kind of want to see a comic with a depressed Ellen drinking herself into a stupor and complaining about Japan. That'd be horrifyingly realistic, by all accounts.

The English lines shown are rather literal (i.e., not entirely natural) translations of the Japanese shown in the ruby text. Are you boys stupid!?This is... Huh!?Thank you very much!I can't read this. Can you read it for me?
*BA-BUMP*
I-Kyaaa! Sensei's so mature!*giggle*Ellen-sensei!I'm very sorry!!
