You know I've always kind of wonder how bell peppers seemed to end up as like the anime/manga equivalent of broccoli or peas.
It does makes sense though, bell peppers have a strong and bitter taste that sure don't make a favourite among kids and I'm sure that there are quite a lot of kids that don't enjoy it... let alone handle it.
It's just a stereotype. I don't think broccoli is quite as popular in Japan as here, so they're the stereotypical hated vegetable. Oddly, though, my mother hates bell peppers, as well as onions, and I get to make reference to this joke about it being childish.

I had the great fortune to have a mother who knows how to cook both broccoli and green peppers, so they're among my favorite veggies. Unfortunately, most people have a tendency to boil them to death (or steam them to death with improper stir-frying), resulting in mushy, slimy, tasteless vegetables with an off-putting odor.
Sort of like liver, really. Cooked properly, they taste great. Overcook them, and they taste like shoe leather boiled in rusty water.

Broccoli is reasonably popular over here; all the kids I know seem to like (or at least, not dislike) it.
The stereotype is that kids hate capsicum and love (Japanese, non-spicy) curry.
