I heard Sendai's going into night battle voice as soon as i read that.. I call that Bukki will caress Tokonatsu's head gently, before perhaps something that could imply something bigger happened, but will get thwarted by something nonetheless..

I find it curious that she was still there, and either awake, or so lightly sleeping that she woke up and immediately looked wide awake.

Yes,there's at least one incident that a launched torpedo turn back around into it's own ship,and plenty of time IJN's oxygen torpedo explode & sunk their own ship while still on board.

Some French destroyers were faster than their own torpedoes. In theory, they could maneuver and end up in front of their torpedoes.

Le Fantasque-class destroyer = 45 knots
French 55cm torpedo = 39 knots at best speed

Destroyer has a six knot speed advantage.

(Japanese torpedoes could go faster than this)

I think you might have meant mechanical failure? But I like the application of "maniacal failure" to the dismal screwup that was the US Navy's torpedo policy in WWII.
