That girl is not holding the MP40 properly. If you hold the SMG by the magazine, it may cause a misfeed of ammo. She should have her hand closer to the barrel and use the small finger foregrip at the magazine port.
Also you don't put your head that close to the barrel of a battle rifle being fired. Her eardrums will go kaput...

There have been videos and pictures of soldiers and people shooting the MP40 like that.

I think you are thinking of the Sten variations. Even then, from the stens I have built, the most common issues from from the bolt not being lubricated since it is just a rod sliding in a tube and there is a lot of friction that can slow down the cycling unless you turn down the middle of the bolt to make only two rings of contact points on the front and back of the bolt. Holding by the magazine, while not advised, usually doesn't cause too much problems. Then again, I never shot an original sten so I don't know what modern changes they did to the dimensions homebuilders use.
Is the soldier in question Indian or possibly African-German? I remember reading about a WW2 German Tank crew novel here one of their members was black. The author explained during the Nazi's regime, African-Germans were persecuted due to their race and were denied good employment except 2 jobs; actors, where they played as uncivilised savages that need "to be rescued and enlightenment" by the mighty Aryans, or the German Military like the Wehrmacht.
I don't believe the male soldier is dark skinned. He seems to have European facial features.
More than likely his face is simply shaded to make the girl more prominent in the picture and to emphasize that he is only acting in an assisting role. Also note that binoculars and MP4s were typically for officers so she is probably his squad leader and him her subordinate. He could also simply have smut on his face. To settle this I will ask the artist directly.
Seeing as how the soldier to the back is standing in both the female soldier's and the building's shadow... I don't see what the confusion is here. Look at body (in shadow), look at face (in shadow), look at helmet (mostly in shadow with hint of light). It's lighting and as Sweetpe pointed out it highlights the main character. Very clear what is happening here. A noob rifleman is about to get an ear-full after firing too close his unterscharfuhrer's head with a K98. It's happened to me before. Ears rang for a good while.
Now, as to the historical note of non-caucasian troops in the WWII German military? Of course there were! It's very well documented. Truth be told; The Waffen SS was the most ethnically and religiously diverse military organization of World War II. I actually presented on this back in university lol. Ah, the picture of a whole battalion of Waffen SS Muslims mid-prayer... You could see minds being blown in the audience. It was great.

Dude, have you ever met Indians? Many do have sharp facial features, bright eyes and very dark skin... and actually the fact that the girl looks super white only makes this more clear.
Official explanation for the artist. -That guy skin is not black, the artist just want to emphasize the girl character so the male soldier skin left unpainted. -The barrel are quite far ahead of the female soldier so she didnât get hit by sound wave directly(But itâs still very loud.) For an example MG support gunner. -You guys may be right about magazine misfeed but many many german soldier was holding their gun that way. Remember they donât have modern tactical training so our modern point of view canât not apply(For an example - The star side of US flag was not pointing forward until around 70s.)
Good points, although I intuit nonwhites were quite the majority. Not doing any research I guess maybe 10k in all services tops? If by diverse you mean like pan-European and even slavs and Bosnians than sure. You should link me your presentation :)
Although you say the German military was most "diverse" (I hate this word) I think that would more accurately be attributed to the Soviet Union. I believe I remember reading about the palpable shock many Germans had finding that Goebbels's warnings of Asiatic hoards was actually true considering the recruitment of Mongol and other Asians into their armed forces.
I like you already lol. Sadly all of my research and presentation history died with my last computer... A problem seeing as how I need to submit papers for my second grad degree and phd... insert obscenity here. I too despise the word "diverse". There is a tremendous lack of understanding of what the word actually means so I only use it to correspond with current political nomenclature. People also seem to misunderstand what "ethnic" means. For one, it has nothing to do with one's skin colour (as I'm attacked by hippies). In terms of ethnicity (by the actual anthropological definition) the Wehrmacht was by far the most "ethnically diverse". Although the Russians did recruit quite the variety. Although many of their ethnic minorities actually wound up siding with the Germans once given the opportunity. The Cossacks for instance. All of whom were executed to the last man by the Russians after the final surrender (I knew a Hungarian Officer who fought alongside them). Actually, close to 2 million "soviet" soldiers tried to join the Axis forces in 1941 to fight against the communists. The decision not to properly utilize them was one of many great "blunders" made by Hitler and his party during the war. Seriuosly, I violently twitch every time someone calls Hitler a "military genious". Gott I love history. Probably why people don't like me much lol
