Yeah, I really did find that so strange. It was like Game Freak was begging for more renditions of its protagonists like Soara's stonefaced smile Kotone.
Seriously, how hard is it to draw more than one face for the progtag the way it was drawn for everyone else? Yeah, there are like six different eye colors, but that doesn't make it THAT much harder, does it? The textures are like Minecraft-level resolution where you can flagrantly see the pixels, so each face would only take about 10 minutes to draw, and there's no way that would take any appreciable amount of disk space...

Part of the reason I chose Clucky is because male protag's face is much more derpy (I don't call them Sun and Moon in the games). Clucky's character seems to be less predisposed to derpiness, but that's subjective, yeah.
Now, my headcanon has male protag as a dense airhead, and Clucky is a manipulative and mischievous.
