Two different cultures clash here: Japanese and German. The Japanese tend to feel uncomfortable with others being close to them and the Germans don't feel the same way.

    But the picture is cute.

I'd say two fucked-up kids clash here rather than two cultures ;-)

I would say the German one being female and the Japanese one being male trumps any 'culture clash' if shinji wasnt so pathetic in the masculinity department.

Crowded places are not what I am talking about.

Most Japanese do not doll out physical affection the way as other cultures. Asuka was used to that affection but no longer had it when she moved to Japan. She was lonely and Shinji did nothing to help her.

Going a little off topic with this statement, in shinji's defensive (because I truly think shinji's reactions to most things are normal for a boy his age, more realistic) Auska sent him mixed messages from the moment he ever knew her. Yeah shinji is a little wimpy, but look what the poor boy goes through half the time? It's my favorite anime, but it's very obvious that the characters are geared more toward weaker men and stronger women. Yes there are a few acceptations, but that what a I grasp from my NGE nerdness.

I don't know about that. This was addressed in one of the earlier episodes, aptly named "Hedgehog's Dilemma". Shinji could barely handle Misato as a caretaker, much less an intimate relationship.

And it being Asuka was another problem. She sporadically ranged anywhere from "tsundere" to "abrasive bitch".

Although I could never really hate either of these two. I love how so much thought was put into each of the main characters.

If you've seen the directors cut of episode 22 sheds light on how Asuka feels about the situation. I wont tell you what she says since that would spoil the fun.

All I am left with is this:
Would it have killed Shinji to just give Asuka a hug every now and again?

Considering Asuka has a tendency to go
*flirt* -> *abuse* -> *flirt* -> *random act of humiliation*
yes, it may very well have killed him when she kicks him off over a railing.

There isn't a single human being who finds a crowded train to be a comfortable ride.

Strange thing, while watching the show I always was supporting Shinji and wished him to be just a little less wimpy and apathetic, so their relations with Souryuu could have been much better. But seeing them in one bed nauseates me.
Maah, I guess that's because they are 14yo.

Considering that they had to grow up very fast, and in fight to death... yea, that changes many standards.
