I'm more impressed that she beat both the Johto and Kanto sides in a single day.

I'm more impressed people believe DLC, remakes and games developed by only three people at full price is a common complain for everyone except Nintendo. Yet they get away with it since the 90's. No wonder their userbase got a big damage until they scammed new ones with an excersice machine in front of the TV.

Still one of the best post-game bonuses I've ever played, but that said, I never played anything after DPS... Was there ever something on the scale of Kanto being unlocked after the main game was cleared in any other Pokemon game since?

I'm surprised to discover that there are a lot of posts in this pool that either aren't fully translated or still have a check translation / translation request tag despite being apparently fully translated.

So why is it that she couldn't complete it? I never played any pokemon game.

Not all Pokemon can be acquired with a single version. You have to pay twice or get a friend buy the other version for you. In both cases you need a link cable to transfer the Pokemon already included in the cartridge code, but locked because DLC primitive form. However it doesn't matter who you ask still fanning Nintendo, their games are made of only love and not money.

You ever notice how there's always more than one game in each release? Red(Green)/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver/Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, Black (2)/White (2), X/Y, Sun/Moon...well, the first two games are generally almost exactly the same with perhaps some different events but most notably one game will be completely missing Pokemon that the other one has and vice-versa. Thus in order to complete the Pokedex you either need to buy both games and two consoles or find someonme else who has the other one to trade with. The third game in the earlier sets had a fancy feature or two added in.

All of the Pokemon games have at least two versions per generation; most have three, or even a fourth, with the first two (or three in Japan) games having certain Pokemon missing and completely impossible to catch within that version. Then there's a follow-on game (or two) that comes a year or so later. For example, the first generation was Pokemon Red and Blue (and Green in Japan), with the special Yellow edition to be a more direct tie-in to the anime. All those versions (except Yellow) were basically the same, but with different Pokemon locked out.

The point of all that was to force people to trade for the Pokemon they don't have. (Which is why they're using the link cables.) Pokemon was always meant as a pseudo-social game, with kids trying to trade for the Pokemon they didn't have with their friends.

In the latest generation, I actually went and got a 3DS and Pokemon Sun because my nephew was getting Pokemon Moon, and that meant I could trade him some of the Pokemon he was missing. (Although it turns out the global trading feature over the Internet makes that kind of need to actually know someone else with a Pokemon game obsolete... but then, I hadn't played since Gen 1 20 years ago, so what did I know?) Ashigara, here, is basically doing the same thing - Shimakaze beat the game, but is still missing all the Pokemon from the other version, so Ashigara is firing up her old game to trade away her Pokemon to complete Shimakaze's set.

I filled in the gaps (unless I missed one - you might want to put breaks in lists that long, because going through links then back, it's easy to lose one's place) in actual translations. I'll leave it to someone like Paracite to actually take the "check translation" tag off of most of those, so that there's a consistency in translation.

"Check translation" implicates/automatically keeps the "translation request" on, and it's not like every translator will necessarily take that tag off, even if they don't see anything wrong with the translation. (It's only really a problem for someone who's actively searching for "translation request" tags in a pool, like you're doing; most users won't notice. Nearly all those were fully translated, so you'd only notice looking at the tags.)

The commentary suggests that it's more about those jerks that evolve when traded than the different version roster. Even with global trade those are a pain, especially the ones that need an item since you typically get one per playthrough.

Even so, it's solved by trading. It's just that you can do those trades between two cartridges that are the same version. The ones that need a special item are definitely more of a gimmicky jerk, though, and definitely something you'd want to do with a person you know and trust enough to send you one back. (Or just global trade with people who had the already-evolved versions. I found people were plenty willing to trade just about anything for the fossil pokemon once I started mass-producing those things.)

Incidentally, it looks like Ashigara is using Haguro's old Game Boy Color, as she's lent her own to Shimakaze.

Also, certain Pokemon required trading to another player to evolve... Kadabra and Haunter, to name two. So she's in need of a second player to complete the Pokedex.

Ido's Ashigara seems like she's one of the best waifus in his series.

Fossil Pokemon, version-exclusive Pokemon, starter Pokemon--people will trade almost all except legendary Pokemon for these. They're good trade materials if you need evolved Pokemon, especially ones like Porygon2 and Porygon-Z, Rhyperior, Magmortar, Electivire, Slurpuff, Aromatisse, and other stupid gimmicky ones.
(Some will also put up shiny Pokemon in exchange for certain legendary Pokemon, this is common on GTS---everyone will try to "snipe" that shiny Pokemon the moment they see it. I got one after refreshing 10 times on the GTS page.)

The fun of completing a collection... And then, I realize I'm trying to complete a Shipdex right now.

Some Pokemon aren't obtainable even with trading alone. Specifically for the GSC versions, Mew and Celebi had to be obtained from IRL Pokemon events. Well, unless one of your friends already had one from going to an event, then yeah, trade away.

Pokemon events today are easier to access due to the inclusion of wi-fi events, and serial codes
Although for the specific ones such as the "pre-order movie tickets" or "Japanese convenience stores" distributions, you have to be in Japan or have someone there to do it for you.

No matter what I did, I couldn't completely fill the Pokedex!
    Well, aren't you fast...
I cleared that Pokemon you lent me yesterday!
