Incidentally, upon further looking into news on it, there is no means set up for the hackers to actually follow through on their offer to decrypt the files for the ransom and there isn't even any means for them to figure out who has paid, and who hasn't. The fact that there were also reports about how very few people paid up and payments have stopped suggest that you should either try to disinfect your computer yourself, or just give up, as the ransom is just throwing money in the toilet.

iirc it was real. it was originally intended as a joke ransomware. but the code got leaked, and people actually use it for griefing. the creator then make a tool to bypass the program.
