Well, there's 60k+ artworks of Touhou in this site alone, about twice the purported number of artworks of Harry Potter in all tha webs. It's something of a fandom's main commodity or sorts.

Touhou is actually a disease. The games contain subliminal messages which make people create fanart and talk about the series on the internet, all in the attempt to lure more unsuspecting individuals into playing the games.

Aside from the new material... I dunno, maybe 'cause people like it? I see posters claiming all the time that Nanoha's a horrible series, yet this increasing rise in popularity suggests that a great many people disagree with them.

And a popular series is popular because lots of people are entertained by it. 4chan can argue all it likes that Bleach and Nanoha and the rest are made of shit because they "pander to the lowest denominator" or whatever elitist crap they say (curiously, I never see arguments against Touhou's quality for this reason...), but ten million Naruto fans can't all be wrong.

I didn't say that popularity = bad quality, mind that. But popularity will introduce it to people that aren't able to properly judge (due to inexperience, ignorance and so on).

And since something with huge popularity will most likely have a similarily huge opposite (composed of pretty much the same people), you will always encounter "hate". Most of the time one of the sides though has a clearly louder composition, which will then shape the popularity.

It would probably have been better to not reduce this matter to 4 words.

    1) The world its full of stupid people... remember that

    2) Popularity isnt the same as quality
Something good can be popular or not
Something bad can be popular or not

the difference is who watches it
You dont have to lisen to how many watch a show
    But WHO

    Naruto its crap right now
it started really good but it went down and down (manga&anime) and it still have a lot of fans who like it cause you can get all the 12-15 year old retards and make them like it

One piece has been for a bit longer time... and its still good to watch... yes its happy story blablabla nothing bad happens or w/e but its still good it keeps you reading and most of the people i saw watching one piece are over 18...

Twilight (the book) ITS CRAP but it got a TON of readers cause they try to lure certain public (horny girls)

Lucky star lures desperate otakus mostly

BTW Im talking about the fans not the casuals

Naruto fans are really childish i found a lot of the fans and are always always crybaby and childish

One piece fans are more mature than the ones in naruto

Twilight... only women read it and liked it lol

i met a lot of "normal" people who watched lucky star and gave it a 6-7 or stuff like that but the ones that give it a 10 are desperate otakus mostly (Konata its so like me and so moe and kawaiiiiii i want to marry her)

Hardly. I don't care if a person doesn't like a series for a legitimate reason, but I take great offense to the notion that Popularity = Poor Quality and I've seen one too many anons make that statement both here and on the 'chans.

To me it seems that accessibility plays a major role. Haruhi was an amazing accomplishment because the writing and animation were both fantastic. However, it was also accessible, in that the story was easy enough to follow and get into (it was the character development which in my opinion resulted in so much success).
When you take a show like Higurashi, the writings top notch, the animation's decent, and the character development is superb. Yet, it sacrifices mainstream appeal with its subject matter. There's no question that Higurashi beats the hell out of Nanoha in almost every way (except for animation budget) but again Nanoha's a light easy show to get into (even if the overall plots fairly mundane).
The marketability also comes into consideration. I mean the queens blade anime is perhaps the most juvenile attempt at making a pervy anime serious I've seen yet. It's gonna make a hell of a lot of money though despite their being better anime out there. The "watchmen" problem as I call it.

From your post alone, it's obvious that you haven't lurked enough since 4chan doesn't do elitism, but, rather, just opinions and trolling. Then again, opinions and trolling seem to go side-by-side there... Also, I think one should check again on the definition of pandering because Bleach doesn't pander. Not with what you might be thinking. A show like Queen's Blade can be considered a pandering anime. Bleach, on the other hand, it's just very much a formulaic action series for boys in general. Although, it's dislike by the majority of 4chan, though. Contrast to Nanoha since it's liked by the majority there. And for good reasons too.

What's there to even discuss here? Popularity doesn't denote quality. Any sensible person know and understand that. Opinions, though, is a different matter... a different topic.

In the end, whether it's popular or not doesn't matter; not even in the slightest. if a person finds a series enjoyable and said series interest them for whatever reasons or attraction, then they may do whatever pleases them.

Anyways, I can already see Touhou breaking over a thousand for doujin circles this year. Which adds to even more impressiveness.

Hatsune Miku should instead be Vocaloid, or an OR query with every character. That'd say something meaningful.

4chan says Naruto is shit because it's aimed at 15-year-olds and most people on 4chan, at least outside of /b/, are over 18. You can enjoy Naruto in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way, but if you're over 18 and think it's genuinely good, you really have some growing up to do.

How much is "what I've seen"? If you've only seen the first season then you still haven't touched on the main story yet. Stick with it, it'll get much better once things start making sense.

One, if you don't want discussion then get off the internet and go hide in a cave somewhere.

Two... comes pretty darn close, but Godwin's Law only covers Hitler/Nazi comparisons. I don't think genocide in general is covered under the rule of the law, but in the interest of avoiding inappropriate comparisons it can probably be included under the spirit of the law.

Silent7, 4chan is very elitist. You should try to lurk harder.

Idiosyncrasies characteristic belong to a character or series =/= pander. It sounds like you're misinterpreting things, like a person who judges based on an image or the surrounding stories/joke you see on /a/, even when you don't know the full story or meaning behind them. Similarly, like a person who judges a series based on a few scans/pics, thinking he or she has it all figured out, which leads to the creation of misguided expectations or false opinions, fueling their dislike or interest of that series even more. And imo, those are potentially one of the worst types of trolls. That, or simply your definition of pandering is perhaps off. Also, exaggerated or blowing up certain psychotic characteristics or jokes =/= pander, either. In case you're wondering, that is. Because if that was the case, a vast majority of series would be pandering because they "appeal" to certain targeted audiences more than what's intended, even within their respective demographics.

You're right. It's my error there because I can't speak for the other boards. With that, I meant to say /a/. What I've said still holds true, though.

elfen lied and higurashi are polar opposites in terms of storytelling and themes. Elfen lied was a great anime but higurashi still trumps it, again you have to put more into it to derive any sort of satisfaction from the plot.

I guess this chart only (or mostly) concerns japanese sites (like Pixiv).

Besides, this very site gets like 10 000 pictures per month, and one quarter of them is Touhou, so this chart isn't too far-stretched from reality.
