Momiji must not have known that the RX-78 shield, while it was initially pretty tough compared to Zeon's weaponry at the time, wasn't nearly as tough as Gundam itself and became rather disposable as the series went on. If I remember correctly, when that shield did get damaged, it was usually from a melee attack.

It could sometimes be completely destroyed by a powerful enough missile, but that might be memories from a different Gundam series. But yeah, while though, it got outclassed really fast; just like the RX-78-2 itself, really.
