I'm guessing Yukari and Ran couldn't handle the "new" Gensokyo and died somehow, and Chen is now weeping over their memory, even as she slowly takes control of the horrible megacity her world has become.

They most probably died of hunger, given the "poverty" they were living in (according to this artist). And Chen realizes the paradox of having everything now, but never being able to meet her family again.

Feels bad, man.
River fish and mountain greens with rice is an extremely nutritious diet though, the only thing missing is fruit..
I'm guessing they simply became estranged when Chen got rich.
70% of SDM stock owned by Chen... considering that Remi would have been the most knowledgeable about this sort of thing you would think she would have kept at least 51% of shares among herself and people she thought she could trust (aka Patchy, Sakuya, Flan, and Meiling) leaving only 49% for the other employees and the public
which would mean not only has she lost her home, she's been betrayed by her friends.

It doesn't sound like something Remi would acutally understand
Something like that would had been left to Patchy and Koa at best Still doesn't mean that it Couldn't happen that way
Finding the loops is how the game is played, and Chen won that part

still sad though
well I meant the most knowledable compared to other Gensokyo residents, but why wouldn't she understand? she's been on the outside up until the Dot Com era, she's clearly rich and managing finances is not something that Patchy or Koa would seem interested in doing. granted she likely has someone take care of day to day expenses (Sakuya, and before her other maids or butlers) because theyre simply petty things tosomeone of her social level, but with her boredom I'm sure she's had her hand plenty in investing venture capital and stock markets over the years (and manipulating the fate of many companies therewith)
Yeah. With the mother/daughter bond those two have, that is NOT happening. Ran and Yukari probably - for some unfathomable reason that completely escapes me, since Yukari is the hax queen - couldn't survive the changing times, and only Chen, young and flexible, was able to adapt. She keeps their hats as mementos of simpler times, when she didn't have much, but was still happy. Now, she has everything, but she'd trade it all in a heartbeat to bring her mother and grandmother figures back to life.

What you serious? the girl who canonically decided she'd conquer the moon?

In her defense, the only Lunarians she had ever met up until that point were Kaguya, Eirin, and Reisen. She had no clue that the Lunarians were on a completely different scale of power compared to Gensokyo residents and that, as strong as Eirin and Kaguya are, they're both mere bugs compared to Yorihime and Toyohime. Now, if Yukari had shown up and told them, "By the way, I tried to conquer the moon over a thousand years ago with an army of high-level youkai and we all got trounced... hard. They've probably gotten way stronger since then." Remilia probably would have reconsidered it.
Down with oppression. Take back the means of production. Join our revolution. This time of transition will be marked with chaos and confusion. But we will not be eaten by cynicism and disillusion. We will wait until our plans come to fruition.
