Oh, this is gonna be golden. Incomming in 5...4...3...2...
It was actually a little heartbreaking. On the first page where this guy appeared I thought it was just some unworthy flea bitten bachelor that wanted a piece of that, but when the author just laid down their backstory of them together, and his reaction to it on next page I got pretty sad for him, obviously having gotten stronger over a very long span of time, gained followers and longed for the day they would be reunited, only to see her having tied the knot with some would-be suicidal passerby.
The cat would most likely feel agonizing remorse if he knew that the fox had been held captive with talismans only few days before and he had just missed out on his chance for a heroic re-entrance. She saving him from the confinement and sure death of a plastic bag as a kitten and him returning the favor by releasing her from the confinement and oblivion of being sealed away. Thinking about it that way, it almost feels like a love story arc that never came to be, because of a single random variable.

This is basically every "unlucky childhood friend" character ever. (And also a part of why I always have a soft spot for the osananajimi archetype.)

Yeah, I expected this was going to be played for comedy in the form of the "jealous childhood friend" trope. It felt like a bit of a gut punch afterwards.
I'll get strong enough to protect you... no! I'll come to see you again once I've surpassed you.I have had my fun... I suppose now I'll live running and hiding.
We should part ways as well. Go and live as a beastfolk......I can't protect ane-san as I am right now.RightBoss!
