It's determined by going to the "home" screen, where the top few characters are your current party, the bottom-most character is a visiting "guest" from the first character/representative of a someone on your friend's list (hence, you'll see a lot of Nino), and then there are two that will be random unless you have some that are ready for Hero Merit feather collection.
