In hindsight, it happened probably because the Mario universe lacked a badass goth big tiddie GF. All the female characters in Mario were damsels in distress (Even Daisy flip flopped between that and badass most of the time. Her design is also arguably mediocre...)
I don't think I've ever seen something get popular so fast, it's amazing. You can't go a single page without seeing Bowsette art. I was just watching the tag number go up while I was browsing.

Crazy that it's nearly 7 years ago. Just as crazy is how much art Bowsette is still getting to this day. Right now, there are 8 months worth of art spread over four pages here (2 months on the first page). That might not sound like much, but it's a lot for a nearly 7-year-old "meme character", whom you'd only expect to get new art once in a while.
