Blame the author's thought process. Oh hey we need to think names for the characters in a dorm that has cat as their symbol, so why not google obscure names that sounds ethnic and use that?

Everyone has those reta— silly names. Somali just happens to be the worst.
(Okay, the Chinese characters may be even worse, but only if you understand Chinese [and a bit of Chinese culture]. Seriously, who the flying fuck calls their children "Butterfly" and "Hand Plum Ah"!?)
The Japanese ones are okay. Bit groan-inducing at times, yes, but at least they don't BSOD your brain.
... On reflection, names like this are an excellent reason why sometimes just "Job + Descriptor" are perfectly valid names.
Wouldn't work in a school setting though. You'll end up with Male Student A, Female Student C, Male Teacher Gamma, etc. Likely an improvement, but hardly adequate.
The Asian characters' names are either partially or fully dog-related, including names that are just dog breeds. Ditto for the Western character's names vis-à-vis cats. Somali, a.k.a. long-haired Abyssinian, is a cat breed. That's all there is to it. But yeah, the "Chinese" names do kind of get the short end of the stick; they only even sound dog-related when interpreted via Japanese (though to be fair, it's not like China is even confirmed to exist as a separate country in their universe. Or any other real country, for that matter).
