I'm going to need some input from anyone with sufficient expertise in horse-racing terminology. The respective captions used for Kaga and Kongou, in horse-racing terms, refer to the horse second-most likely to win, and then to any horse that counts as a "maybe" but isn't the least likely/dark horse. Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate the proper equivalent terms in English.

I'll have to take your word on it. I'd never heard the terms "Solid Horse" (not even in Metal Gear) or "Faltered" for horses. The former makes reasonable sense, the latter seems odder to me, but I'm not in a position to question its validity.

The problem with that is that most other readers wouldn't understand most horse racing terms, either. Just looking them up, a "Bomb" is a winning horse that had long odds against it (a winning "Dog"), while a "Bismarck" is a favorite that the bookies don't expect to win. If you have to explain the terminology after making a loose translation, you might as well make a loose translation that makes sense to people.

Yeah, I saw those, and they didn't seem to fit the terms here exactly, which is part of what was giving me trouble. I was hoping for English equivalents that were more commonly used and thus better known, along the lines of "favorite" and "dark horse", that I simply hadn't encountered. If such don't exist, so be it.

Normally, I would suggest "even money" for someone who probably has a 50% chance of winning, the problem is, an even money (or 1:1 odds) horse is almost always considered the favorite (like "Even money says Kongou did it" is a response in the affirmative). This seems more like differences in culture than anything else. Yeah, I think the translation, as-is, is appropriate.

I have a good feeling the dakimakura-pose Yamashiro will have full art posted by Rappa. He hasn't posted any of the bonus panels by themselves for a long, looooong time.

I recall one of his summary videos containing single panels of Yamashiro lovingly embracing a plush version of the Admiral while Fusou just looks at her in disbelief, and another panel where Yamashiro is happily rubbing the Admiral's uniform sleeves across her face (makes sense in context).

There's a panel at the end of this set where Yamashiro is likely being interrogated by Murakumo, so it's safe to say that she's suspicious of her. If we can't have that panel submitted on its own here (since it's in Rappa's latest video as opposed to its own art submission), I'd like a request to know what's going on. Yamashiro's got the, "Uh-oh, she found out" look about her.

EDIT: She briefly confronts Kaga as well.

It's tricky. Contender just means "has a decent shot at winning", and there can be multiple contenders (heck, multiple favorites too, even, because of different people/groups doing the evaluation). 対抗（馬） also has the same connotation, but when listed up on the tote board with the ○ mark, it explicitly refers to the horse with the No.2 highest odds of winning (or No.2 lowest payoff rate).

(Overall, it's because gambling is more regulated in Japan, so there are fewer bookies offering odds. Everyone mostly follows the 'official' tote board, so there's agreement on which horse is #1 and which is #2, so 本命/対抗/etc. has more restricted meaning [explicitly #1, #2, etc.] compared to their English equivalents.)

Similarly, the 穴 (hole, as in "money trap") all refer to 'dark horses' ("not likely to win, but what if it does...? I'm gonna lose a fortune/make a killing then..."). When listed on the tote board though, 単穴 ("dark horse favorite") refers to the horse with the No.3 odds, putting it higher than 連下 ('average' horses, with almost no chance at No.1 but might have a shot at No.2). The rest of the 穴 are listed lower though, with 大穴 ("darkest horse", lit. "biggest trap/windfall") being the horse with the lowest odds that is still worth considering.

(This means 穴 has a slightly different meaning than the original meaning for "dark horse", which refers to a horse with an unknown history and hard-to-place odds. Over time though, "dark horse" has sort of acquired a meaning close to 穴 [i.e. "long shot", but still worth considering]).

単穴 horses don't have 50/50 odds of winning (that's usually the favorite, because 1:1 is very 'good' odds when there are multiple 'players' in a competitive game, like, say, mahjong). But, yeah, "underdog" gets the meaning across quite well.

TL;DR: The Japanese horse-racing jargon has broad equivalents in English, but when listed on (or associated with) the tote/betting board they acquire more restricted meanings that are harder to get across (beyond #1, #2, #3, long shot), but Moonspeaker does an excellent job of getting the meaning across.
