Yeah, sure it's cute but she's got a certain level of flashiness that doesn't quite jive with me. Although, I will say those armoured stockings are right up my alley.

A darker blue and a slightly higher top probably could have fixed the outfit. Wish the rigging was a bit closer to the standard though.

All in all not too bad? Nisshin's outfit seems to be hitting the notes a bit worse for me, feels a bit too overly formal/stereotypical/traditional(not actually sure what's making it feel off to me...oshiro project?). Rest of her feels right though.

Note like all opinions, this is subjective.

I wrote this off as AL art until somebody pointed out to me that it's actually a girl for KC. But really, only KC would have boots like that lol.

    - 2 carriers (Saratoga and Intrepid)

    - 1 destroyer escort (Samuel B. Roberts)
    - 1 carrier escort (Gambier Bay)

    And now...

    - 1 destroyer (Johnston)

Does it really make a difference? The fact that Kancolle is getting a different artist is already a good thing in itself. There’s only so much the usual (3-4 and Shibafu) artists can bring to the table and it’s always nice to see different artstyles and take on other ships.

Kancolle, Azur Lane, that chinese ripoff with the Blue Fubuki, it’s all the same. As long as the art looks good and some effort is put into it, is what really matter.

Unless, you were hoping for another new U.S ship by Shibafu again...heh heh.

Honestly do think that Intrepid's art was "arguably" designed better, the issue was that Shibafu pulled a Summer Mikuma on her face.

Reading the commentaries: damn, I imagine the outrage if the ships from Ayaki, or some from Ugume and Yoshinori, like Furutaka and Shimakaze, had came out recently. They look the most "Azurlane-ish".

For me, it's the use of vibrant blue and red that makes this feel unlike any Kancolle art before it. As far as I can remember (not very far, as I'm kind of a newcomer to Kancolle), Kancolle art had always been slightly paler in color. The near lack of white on her clothes is also rare amongst previous arts (The only other shipgirl I can remember having no white on her garment is Gotland). One last thing I've noticed is her eyes, I can't explain it well, but they seem to have more "depth" than other shipgirls before her.
I do like the design, though. It's slightly outlandish in a good way.

I haven't thought about that, but you're right!
After you've piqued my interest in the relation between her outfit and the USN, a little more searching led me to this site, and on it a picture of USS Johnston's camouflage (seems to be called "Measure 21") being in nearly the same shade of blue. I'm not really an expert on WW2 warships, though, so I'm not entirely certain whether it's true or not.

I argue that is false. Every artist in Kancolle adds a little bit of what they think fits the Ship+girl aspect of the character and each have their own unique take on what makes a Kanmusu and their equipments. This is the reason why I love Kancolle so much, cause there’s an artist for everybody that someone can enjoy(and sometimes hate.)

The reason you’re saying it looks like something out of Warship/Azur Lane is probably cause you’ve been seeing those much more.
Also, it’s because Zeco designed for those other games as well.

    Show

Keep in mind that Azur Lane and the other ripoffs also copy from Kancolle, albert more flashier but then, we do have Yoshinori who does that.
From what I see, most artist that try to design a new Kanmusu from other games tend to follow and even just downright copy what Yoshinori does and try to ba-dazzle and wow since his girls are the ones that draw in the most views.
It’s reasons like that I can’t help but despise some of those other game’s artwork because rather than bring something new, they are only trying to suckle in whatever little popularity they can get from Yoshinori’s designs. Keep in mind, I’m not saying they don’t try because I know alot of the artist in those games do and this is not for all the artist, but many only try in the sense of imitation and that should never be what the focus is when trying to design something. It’s good to homage every now and then but too much of the designs I see from the other games are just copy, copy, copy with little to no effort put into making it their own.

It’s also why I like Kancolle more because Kancolle has different artist and they all have their own interpretation and design rather than just trying to copy off the more(debatably) popular artist in kancolle. Shibafu’s potato face that range from awkwardly dopey to squeezable cheeks adorable with amazing detail to the gears, Bob’s watercolor like drawing with absolutely gorgeous clothing details, Fujikawa’s ability to draw multiple of the same class that although go unnotice each have their own distinct difference that catch your eyes some way, Akira’s awesome design of the Abyssals that can change from humanly pretty to alien creepy within a flick of a finger, and so on and so on. In Kancolle the artist to me seem to be much more free. They have their own style, they have their own ideas and they don’t have to worry about pandering to others(except for Yoshinori, since he’s Mr.fanservice.)

Also, I think the reason why people are saying she look so much more like someone out of another game might be the coloring and resolution of the picture. Lot of the previous Kanmusu from artist like Bob, Shibafu and even Akira’s colors are more....subtle. Their color aren’t too bright, especially the skin. I don’t really know how to explain it, but it just feels like their characters blend in with the game while Johnston is popping out. But that might be just me and my eyes might be just fucked.

In any case, I think the artist did the best he could and, as I stated above, it is always great to see a different artist’s work in the game.

Except that Nisshin is probably the 2nd most saturated kanmusu after Johnny girl, which is in line with newer Bob works but contrasts quite a bit with stuff like the K2 wolves.

On the flipside, Sammy B is also a lot more washed out. Maybe it's just a direction some artists are deciding to take with the more HD Kancolle?

I agree except the fact that you treated as if Azur Lane has no souls in their design-wise. I don't know about WSG but I personally think that both AL and KC are good in their own way and more than just "le copycat" in case of the former. I mean sure, AL are more "fanservice-first" kind of design but it's still beautiful and I don't see how it's "similar" to Yoshinori's.

Also people sick of Kancolle having like 3-4 artists over and over, especially Shibafu, while AL has like 6 different artists and that's why people drove to Azur Lane in mass. Kadokawa recently adding non-Japanese artist to their roster is good but kinda too late imho.

They said Shibafu's Intrepid marked the death of KC, yet it survived to see Nelson's implementation and then some. You see, when one can look past the 'cosmetics' that is character CG, they'll realize that Shibafu's ships are not unlikable as characters nor they are useless as units to deserve all the hate.

I became curious and went through list of ships by image on AL wiki in attempt to check the number of artists involved. I'm sure someone out there can provide an exact number, because I stopped at 50. Granted, some of the artists have only produced artwork for a single character, while others, like kaede, saru and hao have contributed a whole bunch of designs. It's not surprising that some people prefer this approach, while others favor more consistency in designs.

Personally, I don't think that Zeco's shipgirls are somehow out of place in KC. Then again, I do enjoy somewhat flashy designs, such as Tama K2

I would argue that people "going to AL en masse" has less to do with its large pool of artists and more to do with AL's aggressive attempts at expanding into other markets and its better looking gameplay.

Moreover, I don't see how adding non-Japanese artists will somehow magically freshen up the art.

Well, IDK if its too "Azur Lane" but I don't think this design out of place in KC, considering some KC Shipgirls' uniform also gives similar vibes.

Treaty cruisers? Or the newer, heavier stuff?

Treaty cruisers would be all over the place in terms of weight, with the lighter ones being heavier than the heavy ones. A New Orleans-class or Portland heavy cruiser and a Brooklyn-class light cruiser.

If you want later, Cleveland-class or Atlanta-class light cruisers, and Baltimore-class or the unmatched Des Moines-class heavy cruisers. The first of each set are the contemporary normal ships. The later are the odder rapid fire jobs (5 inch AA cruiser and 8 inch rapid fire heavy cruiser).

Azure Lane always looked like it was trying too hard, and I'm definitely getting those vibes here. The cuffs on the sleeves feel like a bit mutch. Her stance feels overly-sexualized. Her torso is too thin/hips are too wide. Her giant propeller shoes are a bit overkill.

I've always appreciated KC for being a little more grounded and its emphasis on details and historical references. If I'd just seen this art on Google with no references, I'd probably peg this for an AL design.

And a submarine. You can't have a complete Battleship fleet without a submarine. :)

I'd like to see Chicago and Houston get the cruiser slots

And then subs since... the US had so many of 'em.

Given the devs pattern for implementing foreign subs, we all know which one it's going to be...

    ...Mingo.

EDIT: Well... f'k me, I got it wrong again.

Searched this out after watching a documentary about the battle off Samar, I remembered “isn’t there a gacha or whatever about anime girls based on famous battleships? I wonder what the Johnston would be like.”
Honestly I was expecting something much more die hard. The sheer determination and tenacity of that ship cannot be understated.

Hi! I'm USS Johnston of the Fletcher-class! I'm going to be a fighting ship. That means I'll keep on fighting until I run out of shells! Once again... I'll protect all of you!

Hi! I'm Johnston of the Fletcher-class! I fought all over the Pacific! I fought in the Solomons, the Marshall Islands, and Leyte Gulf. Off of Samar, I fought as part of Taffy 3, including Sam and the others, against a massive fleet. I'm Johnston of the Fletcher-class, don't forget it!

Make sure to supply me with loads of ammo! I'll be counting on you!

    Onward! Fire!

    More shells!

Night battle? Heh... let's do this!

    Ahhh~! Not... not bad...

Ugh... my cannons... I'm not done yet!

Uwaaa~! Is the engine still fine? Can I move? I can still... keep on going!
