Depends if he's willing to put in the effort and learn new stuff. He's only excited for exams because he knows he'll do well.

No kidding.

There are many people in the real world that are so adverse to risk and failure, they absolutely refuse to do anything they aren't guaranteed to ace in.

I've seen my share of such people in the workplace as well.

A lot of times, if you fall behind academically, you're never able to catch up. Having not learned the core concepts adequately, you aren't able to figure out the concepts those build on. This is what being held back a grade is supposed to correct, but in practice the shame of being held back a grade ends up overwhelming everything.

By basically being moved back a few grades without the shame of everyone (besides his sister) having known he did so, Mahiro has the academic second chance that few people can ever get in the real world.

If he doesn't capitalize on that by studying up as he goes, of course, all that will be wasted. But he's gaining new self-confidence in every aspect of life under this female persona, so there's every possibility that he... or perhaps I should say "she" will make full use of the second chance she's been given.

I've been this person many times. That's one of the major downsides of being a Gifted Student. You're so used to just succeeding without even trying that you never taste failure, which makes failure scarier (and when failure DOES inevitably hit, you don't have the skills to cope with it that everyone else learned ages ago, and your previous record of success goes right into the toilet).
