I'd like to think the transition from Bowser to Bowsette isn't a weakening, but a metamorphosis.

Yea, she won't be able to do some things she used to do as Bowser, but maybe has a whole new array of skills, like setting her nails ablaze and slashing through things with them.

They never even entered the ruins, much less got this far, so they were only passing on vague information that an artifact with great power might exist. The guy talking about it even said he didn't have a chance to investigate. He found a tablet that talks about an artifact that he believes may have the power to make the super crown permanent.

That's a damn scary interface!

It doesn't make much sense to me that Bowser's powers would disappear just because he's a female human now. Hell, in the past few chapters we saw Bowser shape shift her size -- an ability that only Bowser's dragon (turtle?) form was supposed to have access to. I'm pretty sure even without the Super Crown Bowser will still have super strength, fire, and as previously mentioned size shifting. Even if she did become far weaker than her original form, Bowser should still be far above average of what normal humans can do.

I assumed that Bowser's weakness as the story has progressed has had more to do with her constant fighting, injuries, and exposure to the cold. Like at your peak you'll be able to run a 100 meter dash no problem, but if you run that dash ten times in a row you won't be able to perform it at the same speed anymore. Bowser is probably just extremely tired after having basically no rest for this entire journey. Or to put it in RPG terms, Bowser's mana/magic points for her powers is severely depleted.

Ultimately, it is kind of a moot point that Bowser would be "weak" as a human when you consider Mario. Mario despite looking like an ordinary human still has extraordinary strength, enough so that he can grab Bowser by the tail and fling him dozens of feet in the air. Assuming Lady Bowser is even remotely on par with Mario then she should have no problem going on adventures and whatnot in the future. This is to say nothing of Bowser's studies of sorcery under Kamek -- it's not like being human has caused her to forget about how those spells work. Bowser as she is now should still be able to cast powerful spells if she applied herself.

I'd say it's more mental "weakness" as Bowsette is literally trying to change away not just from the physical form of Bowser, but the mindset as well. The wavering self-confidence affects just how strong Bowsette is at any given time and since she considers the happiness she has with Mario due to the crown as opposed to her own self-realization her physical strength is tied to how she views herself.

In fairness to the firmament device, it may be a case of "necessary evil" rather than an outright malicious machine. I imagine there might be some painful process to making Bowser's human form permanent, a pain that could cause her death. Sorta like how surgery is necessary to save your life in some cases, but could kill you. So it might be a malicious machine, but there's no way of knowing for sure until the next few chapters come out.

I'm interpreting the device as basically subjecting Bowsette (and Chompy, if she got sucked in there, which is likely since she's the bearer of the Super Crown) to an astral-projection experience. As such, they will experience the subsequent events in something like their astral bodies, and thus "physical" damage to those bodies is in fact damage to their souls.

Basically, this whole next bit is going to be a big-ass metaphor, where they'll be doing complex high-level sorcery using a representation of their physical bodies as a metaphor for the hocus-pocus Bowsette is trying to do. And it's dangerous magic that has the potential to inflict serious spiritual injury or death.

If I were to guess, one of two things is happening:

A) Bower's soul is being purged of her original form, with the human soul being firminated/fixed into place. In essence only Bowsette will remain, as the Bowser part of her soul will be "scrubbed away". Naturally if it's that extreme, then having your soul rearranged would be intensely painful.

B) In order for the Bowsette form to remain in place, the energy balance between human form and original form must be re-calibrated. In other words, the ability for Bowsette to return to Bowser must be "scrubbed out" of her energy flow. Think of the chakra flow in Naruto, and how there are ways to throw it out of balance so it's harder to use it. The device might decide that the original Bowser energy inside her is a foreign influence that needs to be removed, sorta like a very fixed in "cancer". That no doubt would be intensely painful.

Well given how many Anime I've watched in my life where a protagonist's power was determined by the quality of his emotions/mental state, then I'm all for that as an explanation. It makes sense to me.
