Both are Ayanami's clones, piloting 0.0 Eva. There were produced at the same time and have nearly identical figures, appearances, et cetera. So to help tell them apart, they were given different hairstyles (Quatre = silver hair, Cinq = short haircut). The Ayanami series clones produced at Nerv did not develop self-awareness; they are remotely controlled by Ayanami Rei via a mental link. However, with the descent of Quatre's 0.0 Eva and her subsequent disappearance, it can only be assumed that she is acting independently. But with Quatre presently at large, this cannot be confirmed, and the truth remains unknown.
