Traditionally, beds are not used in Japanese households. A futon will be stored in a closet and laid out in an area that is otherwise living space. While western style beds are becoming more common, in cramped quarters such as most apartments futons are still the norm.
On the other hand, if your floor is a mess you have nowhere to sleep.
