British and Commonwealth military forces generally salute with the palm pointing outward, but the British Royal Navy is a notable exception with members saluting with palm pointing downward. Anecdotally, this had to do with sailors working with pitch and tar, so it was considered unsightly to present a dirty hand when saluting.
