It takes wonderful people to make wonderful works, and in that sense, the people at Kyoto Animation are wonderful and talented people. Though it is hard to get over the tragedy that had just happened, I believe they can, and they will.

    33 people dead for now.
Apparently arsonist had enought time to sprinkle gasoline in entire building and nail all the doors because... somebody decided that it's a good idea for their worldwide famous animation company to shut down all the security systems and have no guards in the same day when there was huge meeting with all important people sitting in one room.

Don't get me wrong - That guy that set the fire and trapped them inside is a horrible person and will go to jail for very fucking long time. But i strongly believe that people responsible for leaving all their important workers with no security at all should be sitting next to him and gets exactly the same treatment because it's just so fucking dumb and irresponsible.

I really hope all this publicity does not give ideas to other crazies.

Losing Kyoani is alike losing national treasure and to die in something as horrible as fire is awful.

I just don't get how he managed to pour 40 liters of gasoline around whole building and set it on fire without anyone calling police/firemen or stopping him as what I understood from news it was just one man?

I was in belief that Japan had efficient police/firemen.

Part of me is glad Japan has death penalty but I really hope they choose most painful method.

I've haven't heard a solid answer how much gasoline was spread before the fire. It's very possible he continued spreading it after dousing and igniting the main doorways, especially since it's been said he doused anybody that tried to escape with more gas. Simply put by the time people realized what was happening, he was already making everything worse so that nobody at the studio could stop him.

As for the fire itself I'm sure police/firefighters did everything they could but when you're fighting A LARGE-SCALE INDOOR GASOLINE FIRE that's not something I think they're equipped to handle on a moment's notice; water would likely only help it spread.

It was stated that firefighters were alerted to the fire at 10:35 local time when neighbors called reporting hearing an explosion and seeing smoke bellowing out of the building. The situation was probably already bad by the time firefighters became aware of it.

They did have security, as they had received death threats prior to the arson, it was just that the doors were unlocked as they were expecting visitors and that's when the arson took place. A far bigger issue was that the arsonist blocked the entrance and at least two fire exits, and then sprayed/ignited people who went towards the exit. As far as having guards and security systems; the security systems, to my knowledge, were online and most animation studios don't have security guards across all their studios. I think you're underestimating just how quickly a fire like this can spread.

My understanding is that Japanese prison facilities are quite spartan compared to American ones. I, for one, hope he lives. In total solitary confinement. At least for as long as he is sane enough to understand what is happening to him.

Definitely will anyway since it's based on how many victims died. Death by hanging at the execution center.

Honestly, I feel death doesn't really do justice when someone commits a crime like this. Flip of a switch, press of a needle, the opening of a trap door, and they get out. If you think they'll burn in hell, great, but we don't know that. For all we know it's just empty oblivion, cessation of existence. They get an easy out. So I would prefer they pay the price with the life they have.

Well the arsonist did have a criminal record robbing a convenience store back in 2012 with a knife and was arrested.

The arsonist bought 40 liters of gasoline 30 minutes before the fire on Kyoto Animation.

With 68 of the 74 victims dead or injured, all of the survivors likely traumatized, and the studio itself destroyed, it's unbelievable that this man nearly succeeded in murdering every soul in that studio.

It takes some kind of cruelty to kill unarmed people with fire. What dark thoughts could drive someone to do this? They didn't deserve to die.

I hope the pain of death frees this murderer from his insanity. I hope the victims will heal and one day make peace with this massacre.

    Its so terrible.

Suspect was heard saying: "[They] stole [my] novel, so I committed arson"

Either this guy is delusional or something is wrong with his head.

Added Momokawa Inako from Nijuuseiki Denki Mokuroku. She's the girl with the bob-cut between Sousuke and Violet. It was a new show KyoAni was working on based on a light novel.

I saw this initially last night and at the time, it was 1 confirmed dead. But this morning, when I saw that 33 died, my heart just sank and I didn't feel well for the rest of the day; its just sickening. My thoughts are with those who are affected by this tragedy. I truly hope that they can recover. Went and donated just now to the GoFundMe page.

Going off memory, I believe the court does not tell the individual when their execution date is. Also, I recall that hanging is still a method there.

    Japan's pretty hardcore. I approve.

How? How can someone be so cruel? I get that people are messed up in the head, but... Committing arson on an animation studio that brings joy and happiness with it's anime?

I pray for Kyoani, I hope it can rise up from this. As for the man who did this? There may be a small percent of people who sympathize with you, but no one else does. I hope he rots in jail.
