According to Wikipedia, they are actually.
Their names are a combination of an elemental and the DNA base. Thymilph = Slyph/Thymine, Adiane = Undine/Adenine, Cytomander = Cytosine/Salamander and Gaume = Guanine/Gnome. Their mechas are also name based on the four guardians of the four directions. Byakou = Byakko, Sayrune = Seiryu, Shuzack = Suzaku and Genber = Genbu.
Basically, the makers of TTGL were insane when it came to names.
