I think biologically speaking, this is a bad kind of vestigeal reflex. Lizards that do shed their skin while being surprised or scared as defense mechanism also shed their tailbones. While the muscles, tendon and the skin tissues do regenerate, the bones shed won't. Instead, it'll be replaced by cartilaginous tissue that only provide support, and can't move like normal, boned tail would.
Luckily for these two, it didn't seem that they lose bone over this, but hey, monster anatomy.
