Scharnhorst unfortunately suffered from below average firepower if my memory is correct.
Below average for a battleship is still more than enough to beat the crap out of any opponent. The problem is when you can't see your enemies, like she did in her final battle.

Scharnhorst would had been fucked against DoY in a straight up fight even under ideal conditions, KGVs were armored to point that their immunity zone against German 28cm guns started around 10km (based on pre-war Krupp tests, going by USN's empirical formula that immunity zone probably starts somewhere between 10km and 15km).
