Taking a stab, the unnamed friend who entered saw the pillow on the floor and went to give it back to the person in the bed. She realized the person sleeping in the bed was herself. She accidentally woke the sleeping one and then began to fade out, cause she was a dream of the sleeping one.
This room seems to have come before the cloning room as the translation implies. And that when the cloning room came into operation this room fell out of favor. Meaning, is the house adapting on its own despite the horrors living in it? That could mean that the house itself isn't so much haunted as it's containing so many different horrors, almost like a prison?
I think the hooded Friend in the bed by Carnivore might be Serval, since she's been cloaked in all of these so far, but there aren't really enough details to say for sure.

As for what happens when you wake up someone else, it seems there would be several problems if you just woke up as many people as you could, so maybe it's like this.... It wouldn't make sense to just wake up "someone", since they're "no one".

Than it added the elevator copy room so that friends can actively keep themselves around. I mean 'Serval' there has died several times now, as have a few other random friends. So it makes some sense that this place, while killing people, or hosting things that kill people, wants friends (be it because it is lonely, bored, or hungry, is anyone's guess).

Basically, based on the twitter replies and such, that it's possible to find an empty room that's not housing a friend or a fiend (evil anomaly) and if you have the will/desperation to want to face the fiends head on you can manipulate a room to serve a positive purpose. But in doing so you make yourself a priority target for the fiends. That still makes me wonder if the apartment acts as a means of housing the fiends; being independent of their existence, rather than something the fiends inhabit in order to spread their influence.

If the above holds true, makes me wonder if Kaban is responsible for the "positive" rooms or at least some of them, seeing as how building useful things for Friends was one of her character traits.

Around 4.5 * 10^38 combinations, based on the observation that buttons can be repeated (assumed always). The knobs and levers don't affect where you go but whether you can get to the floor in a timely fashion. If the Bottle Otter couldn't reach the knob, this might even be a squad that was left for dead while the backup went make more clones.
