This is largely a myth, by the way. Most cats don't react to putting a cucumber or any object behind them (mine will just sniff the cucumber, then look up at you like "what the heck are you doing?"), and those that freak out will freak out about almost any object "sneaking up on them", not just cucumbers.

Mine will freak out either way even if she saw me placing a cucumber or anything of that general shape down on the kitchen counter.
