I suppose that this is supposed to be a play on Sherlock's morphine/cocaine addiction (though her name is Watson).
Watson was a medical doctor (and a field medic during I think the Zulu wars), along with being I think a chemist.
I do recall one story (I think one of the point-and-click adventure titles, there were about 200 of them I feel) where Watson administered a drug to calm a hyper-ventilating witness.

He was an assistant surgeon in the second Anglo-Afghan war and got medically discharged (caught a bullet and then got a nasty fever while laid up), funnily enough he didn't like Sherlock's cocaine addiction. Though it was legal at the time to take cocaine.
