terrance rainer and parasect (pokemon) drawn by kinkymation

Artist's commentary

  • Original
  • During sex Parasect might seem unresponsive, but you can tell what she's actually feeling if you look at her mushroom. They lack organs, so they rely on Parasect's body to reproduce. The shroom feels every touch and kiss for the musu and reacts accordingly

I hadn't thought about it before when I was playing Pokemon, but seeing this makes me think of cordyceps

Yup. That’s what they are based off of. Same thing in Tlou

I didn’t realize this until a few years ago when I actually paid attention the Pokédex entry.

Before That I legitimately didn’t get the name or why it had mushrooms or why it was grass type or anything. Why it’s eyes were white...

Since then parasect is one of my favorites since it looks innocent but is surprisingly dark and twisted.

The mushrooms pass on the babies as well...

It should be noted that in real cordyceps, the fungus is in control well before any visible mushrooms appear, so it's possible that the mushrooms are already in control even as a paras and evolution doesn't do anything that has not already been done, with the eye change being a red herring.

The Pokédex even stats that when the bigger the mushroom grows, the more its spores are. There must be a prevolution of Paras without the fungi infection.

I hope we get a regional variation of Paras without the mushrooms. And a divergent evolution to go with it.

"Parasect is known to infest large trees en masse and drain nutrients from the lower trunk and roots. When an infested tree dies, they move onto another tree all at once. "

the game is throwing some hard implications here and I don't like it.

edit: I just realized the small and big mushrooms you can get in the games look a lot like the paras/parsect shrooms.

there almost was, one of the pokemon from the Gold/Silver Spaceworld beta leak was a baby paras sitting on top of a mushroom, probaly not yet infected

I’m just waiting for the regional variant of parasect where the mushrooms have moved on to an entirely different species altogether(maybe even a humanoid one?) and turned them into ravenous tlou2 type zombies. And they have an ability that infects the opponent with a zombie virus that makes them indiscriminately attack and spread it
