Sometimes it's hard to trace one's noble potato lineage (see SuzuKuma to Mogami).

Me too. Kantai Collection often has members of the same class wearing variations of the same outfit and drawn by the same artist, but there isn't any real visual unity with some of the larger destroyer classes.

Don't forget Murakumo is also supposed to be a Fubuki class too.

Technically, the Ayanami-class (Type II) were considered upgraded Fubuki-class (Type I). This also extended to the Akatsuki-class (called the Type III). They were all intended to be Fubuki-class, but because they were built in three separate groups across several years which incorporated design innovations discovered through the years they might as well be considered their own separate classes.

They're not that different, though. The difference between the Type III and Type II, for example, is that they have turrets capable of firing at higher angles. Having an upgrade of equipment in the middle of a line of ships coming off the production line isn't that uncommon.

Keep in mind that other "sister ships" in larger capital ship classes have far more notable differences, such as Hiryuu and Souryuu having their islands on differing sides of the ship!
