It's not just the design, his whole character concept is flawed. I still haven't finished the damn game because I couldn't get used to the plot treating this third-rate comic relief character as if he were the actual hero.
I never used him in my party despite him having the best stats because I can't really stand his design. And really, Vaan's design is the only thing I hate about the game and the fact that you can't use anybody else as your avatar in cities.

I think I remember the artist saying he'd wanted to make Vaan a manly badass, but his bosses said no. That's not what Japanese fangirls want, so Vaan became a girly-man.
